📚 Our History
Fair’s Fair began as a small family effort, opening in the basement of 1336 – 9th Avenue SE, Calgary, on October 13, 1988. Just three days before our grand opening, six family members worked tirelessly to stock the shelves with over 7,000 books—carefully collected from garage sales over four months.
Founded by George Henderson and his brother Brian, Fair’s Fair was built on a shared love for books and a commitment to making literature accessible to everyone. While George and Brian played key roles in shaping the business, their friends and family members also contributed, stepping in whenever help was needed.
Thanks to this strong foundation and the dedication of many hands, Fair’s Fair grew beyond its humble beginnings. Today, the business continues to thrive under the leadership of George’s children, staying true to its mission of providing quality books at affordable prices while fostering a welcoming community for book lovers.
Our Mission

Our Values
Fair’s Fair was built on the belief that bookstores should be more than just a place to buy books—they should be a space where people feel welcome, connected, and valued.
We take pride in being a part of Calgary’s story, and we’re committed to serving our neighborhoods with warmth, respect, and a genuine love for books. Whether you’re a regular or a first-time visitor, you’re part of the Fair’s Fair community.
